Theological practices of traditions in most cultures of the African continent, consider the natural world a representation and embodiment of various principles, morals and virtues.

Mboadoma, is a series of paintings that lay emphasis on the Fauna of this natural world, and on the manifestation of these abstract ideals into living matter.

In the Akan Twi language of Ghana, the word ‘’Aboa’’ means animal, this word is a derivative of the word ‘’Boa’’ which means ‘’to help’’. ’’Mboa’’ is plural of ‘’Aboa’’. ’’Doma’’ as a suffix in the case of ‘’Mboadoma’’ means ‘’Variety’’. ‘’Mboadoma’’, the title of this body of work therefore means ‘’Various Animals’’, primarily. The secondary meaning would be ‘’Various helpers’’.

This naming system of the Akans, as it applies to Mboadoma, owes to the tradition of deeming animals as helpers of mankind; as the teachers of various embodiments of ideals.

An expression of this belief as recorded in Akan mythos and literature, teach that:

It is the spider that taught mankind how to weave
The birds taught mankind how to fly
The fishes taught mankind how to swim
The lion taught mankind how to hunt
The ants have taught mankind how to build and
The Gorillas have taught mankind of medicine, and so on.

The various animals of the natural world are embodiments of virtues, morals, principles and skills from which mankind have and continue to learn.

Mboadoma is an undertaking in symbology, it aims to serve as a tool in a learning and relearning process of the attributes of animals and how they have become enduring pillars in the mythologies and spiritual traditions in many cultures of the African continent. 

Mboadoma, is also a celebration of beauty and diversity, one that through an overly simplified depiction of its subjects, suggests the presence of substance that is abstracted and veiled.
It is an invitation to its viewer for closer observation and assessments of these skills, principles, moralities and virtues possessed and embodied and represented by these animals, and an encouragement also, towards the juxtaposition of these observed ideals against one's very own.

Mmoadoma as a project, began in the year 2022. It is one of the only two painting projects that have crossed over from my pre art student era to my current art student era, in my personal history as an artist.
